Every year the World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on October 10th. This year the theme revolves around ‘mental health for all’.
What is mental health?
Some people call mental health ‘emotional health’ or ‘well-being’ and it’s just as important as good physical health. We all have times when we feel down or stressed or anxious. Most of the time those feelings pass. But sometimes they develop into a more serious problem.
Everyone is different. Some people bounce back from a setback while some may feel weighed down by it for a long time. Mental health can change as circumstances change and you move through different stages of your life.
Mental health during coronavirus
Looking after your wellbeing during the pandemic is one of the most important things when staying at home. Here are some top tips to help!
1. Plan your day
Adjusting to the new way of life under Covid-19 can be a risk to our mental wellbeing. As tempting as a pyjama day every day may be, regular routines are essential to our purpose. Starting your day at the same time every morning is the best way to start!
2. Move about
Being active reduces stress, increases energy levels, and help us sleep better. This is a great opportunity to explore different ways of adding physical activity to your day. Even at home, there will be lots of ways to exercise and keep your body moving. At Stanfield Nursing Home we host activities such as chair exercises and yoga for the people we care for!
3. Try a relaxation technique
Picking up a hobby or using a relaxation technique can help improve your mental health and lighten negative feelings. This can include meditation or breathing exercises. A range of relaxation techniques are available from the NHS.
4. Connect with others
Staying at home, or in a care home, can feel lonely at times. Find creative ways to stay in touch with family, friends, co-workers, etc. We have implemented video calls for those we care for to stay connected with their loved ones.
5. Improve your sleep
Feelings of uncertainty and changes to daily life may mean you have more difficulty sleeping. Aim to go to bed and get up at the same time each day to regulate your body clock. A range of tips for improving sleep can be found on the Mental Health Foundation’s website.
