What is person centred care?
Put simply, person centred care is about focusing on the needs of the person rather than the needs of the service. It ensures that people’s preferences, needs and values guide the decisions. Therefore, providing care that is respectful and responsive to the person.
Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. From their preferred hobbies, to their favourite and least favourite foods. So, our staff spend time getting to know and understand the individual requirements. With over thirty years of experience delivering high quality and reliable care, the team at Stanfield Nursing Home are dedicated to offering sophisticated levels of personalised care to all.
Person centred activities at Stanfield
As a nursing home dedicated to providing outstanding care, we are always looking for new ways to increase quality of life for those who stay with us. Staff training teaches our team to offer residents different ways to find enjoyment and fun in life at Stanfield. We do this through hosting different types of activities every day! Whether it’s knitting, listening to music or just collecting the daily newspaper, activities can take many forms.
Each month our Activities Coordinator creates a calendar filled with a range of activities for our residents to get involved in. The careful planning accounts for different interests and capabilities of all who we care for. This is what is meant by person centred activities. For example we have a sensory garden which caters to many hobbies like gardening or simply relaxing by the fountain. There are some which are more individual, such as those mentioned above. And then there are those that are more social, involving a group of people. Whatever the activity is, we encourage residents to participate as much or as little as they like.
These past few months have been a little different for our team. We have had to ensure the continuation of these activities under the guidelines Covid-19 have imposed. Though a challenge, all regular activities have successfully continued with slight alterations, such as social distancing, and staff wearing PPE.
Here are a few examples of the person centred activities our residents enjoy:
- Gentle exercise – Chair exercises, yoga, and musical aerobics are just some of the fitness programmes we offer
- Arts and crafts – We love decorating the home with the wonderful creations that residents make. Using materials such as ribbons, tissue paper, paints and more.
- Movie time, featuring themed nights or residents choice
- Listening to music from a range of genres
- Seasonal and event based celebrations/parties
