This blog forms part of my recently commissioned series of videos showcasing the philosophy and daily life at our care home Worcester, Stanfield Nursing Home. In this article and accompanying video, I hope to highlight the specialist care we provide as one of the leading dementia care homes Worcestershire.
If you put a name over somebody’s head, they tend to react to that name.
Those supporting them are a whole team, and then they tend to respond to that name.
So, people often ask me, “Are you a specialist dementia unit?” And I say, “No.”
What I do feel is that we have a tremendous amount of knowledge in how to support people who are living with all forms of cognitive impairment. But, are we a ghetto?
No, we’re a home, which is caring for people who need our support on a daily basis, whatever their presenting needs.
With 30 years as one of the most experienced dementia care homes Worcestershire…
we have a high level of expertise in areas right across what society now calls, dementia.
I prefer to call it cognitive impairment. That, sort of, goes from very early onset stages, right through for the whole rest of life, of somebody who’s living with cognitive impairment.
We have, over the years, had the privilege of caring for people with Parkinson’s disease, so we have a particular skill in that area, in understanding the continual fluctuation in the changes that go on, for all of us, not just people who are living with Parkinson’s, but for all of us in our lives.
The third area, really, is supporting people with quite complex and multiple health conditions.
As we age, and I include myself here, so our body isn’t performing as well as it used to, when we were much younger.
Therefore, what we’re trying to do is recognise those changes, meet them wherever possible with the assistance of the whole health care profession, so that the person remains happy, comfortable, and safe.
