It’s that time of year again! Christmas entertainment for care homes is an important part of finishing the year on a high. Last year, Christmas at Stanfield Nursing Home was a little different. We made sure the home was COVID-19 secure whilst still providing fun Christmas activities. This involved regular cleaning of decorations that were also put out of reach to avoid residents touching them. Also, our Christmas activities were all socially distanced. This year we plan to ensure the same!
Fun Christmas Activities
For the initial part of our care home Christmas, people enjoyed watching staff set up our Christmas tree in the Oak Lounge. The tree is brimming with lights and tinsel and filled with homemade decorations from people we care for!
Here’s a list of other fun Christmas activities and entertainment for care homes.
1. Creating Christmas cards
Family is an important part of Christmas. Getting people to write a Christmas card for their loved ones is a lovely, heart-warming activity. You can even get creative and have people design the cards from scratch!
2. Decorating gingerbread houses
Nothing beats a craft that you can eat when you’re finished! This year, the 12th of December was National Gingerbread House day. We helped people make their own gingerbread houses using kits.
You can even make this one Christmas entertainment for care homes with a little friendly competition. Best gingerbread house gets the first choice of some delicious Christmas baked goods!
3. Singing Christmas carols
A good one for social distancing! Setting up a sing-a-long to Christmas carols and Christmas songs is a regular activity at Stanfield. It is perfect for getting people in the Christmas spirit and dancing along.
4. Watching Christmas movies
This is a classic form of Christmas entertainment for care homes. There are plenty of holiday movies to choose from, whether you prefer the classics, like Love Actually, or the more modern variety, like Last Christmas.
5. Plan a Christmas crafternoon
This is a fun activity for all with plenty of DIY decorations to make! This could simply involve making Christmas tree decorations like painting wooden shapes or making paper-mache baubles.
6. Plan a Christmas game night
As part of our specialist dementia care, we regularly offer word searches and crossword puzzles. These have a number of health benefits, such as reducing stress and preserving cognitive function.
Christmas-themed versions of these activities are a must!
